Can You Help Me? Ch. 7
Connor x Modern!Reader

You, Connor, and Ben all finally arrived in the city of New York after a few days of travel by horse. You three passed through the checkpoint and you and Connor both let Ben take the lead in front, following him on your own individual horses.

“So what is you stake in all this?” Connor asked, having his horse gallop next to Ben’s while you lingered a little ways behind, keeping a look out.

“Same as yours. Peace. Stability. A land in which all might live side by side – free and equal,” Ben replied.

“Why not join the brotherhood, then?” Connor asked.

“Yeah, why don’t you?” you added from behind the two. Ben looked back at you and Connor before turning back around to face the dirt road.

“My father was an Assassin. Quite good at his job, too, as I understand it. But… I hope to have children someday. It’s hard to live in two worlds at the same time. So I chose to live in one,” You looked down at the mane of your horse. ‘He made a good choice.’ You thought as your face scrunched up in thought. ‘Sooner or later I might have to make that choice: deciding whether or not to leave or stay. I might have to say good bye.’ As you thought this you looked up at Connor who was still conversing Ben.

“I understand,” Connor said, replying to Ben’s earlier statement.

“I still contribute as I can. It’s why we’re here now.” After Ben said this things were quiet between the three of you as you continued to ride onwards to New York. The rest of the ride was silent, all the way up until you three reached the city, where the hustle and bustle of people, horses, and soldiers rung in your ears. You looked around at the brick and wooden buildings of the growing and soon to be famous city. You, still being from the technological era, looked around with awe and fascination gleaming in your eyes. Connor took note of this and slightly smiled at the sight of you, eyes wide and full of wonder as you gazed at the city and its inhabitants, before turning back to face Ben, his face chinaging back to his normal stoic and serious expression.

“What can you tell me of Thomas Hickey?” he asked.

“He has been running and counterfeiting ring in the city. Locate the source of his operation and we can have him arrested. He cannot harm the commander if he is in prison,” Ben replied not looking at Connor. You switched your attention back to the problem at hand listened in on their conversation.

“Do you know where he is?” you asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Not exactly, my dear. But I have an idea where we can begin the search,” he answered. It grew quiet again as Ben guided you and Connor through the city, your horses trotting and keeping close together. You three finally arrived at a safe place to stop your horses and you all climbed off before walking through a more secluded part of the city. Still bustling, but not as much as certain areas. You, Connor, and Ben all walked side by side, you next to Connor and him next to Ben.

“There are rumors of bad bills being circulated here,” Ben started, “No doubt they come from Thomas,” The three of you continued to walk through the narrow street before coming to an opening in between a few buildings. It appeared to be full of the poor along with some suspicious looking vendors. As you eyed the area your now keen ears caught wind of what sounded like an argument between a vendor and a customer.

“What are you up to? This isn’t money! It’s colored paper. You’ve cheated me for the last time! GUARDS!” the vendor called. You and Connor exchanged glances with each other and turned back to watch the customer get scared and flustered before jogging off somewhere. Connor glanced at you, gaining your attention before nodding at you. You gave him a nod and quickly ran to a building before scaling up its wall and pulling yourself up on to the roof. You peered over the edge just in time to see Connor disappear from the sight of the now renamed counterfeiter (the customer). You pulled back and began to follow the man from the rooftops while Connor took the ground. You both continued to tail the strange and suspicious man as he turned down alley ways, streets, and passed busy market areas, still somehow keeping him your hawk-eyed sights, sitting occasionally to watch as the man would fight off a mugger before going on his way.

You hopped on to the next rooftop, keeping both Connor and the counterfeiter within your line of sight. Connor whistled to you and you looked down at him. He gave you a few signs with his hands………….You looked at him confusion, tilting your head to the side. You could’ve sworn you saw him roll his eyes before signing a bit slower………….You shook your head, still not understanding. You heard him softly groan in annoyance before pointing at you then at the counterfeiter and his newly arrived accomplice. You did a quick silent ‘Ohh….’ and nodded at Connor, letting him you know you NOW understood what he was saying and you quickly made your way on to the next few rooftops before jumping on to the one right above the counterfeiter and his friend, eavesdropping on their conversation.

“Oi, Daniel – best put them bills away. The guards is on to us,” The counterfeiter told “Daniel”.
  “How? What happened?” ‘Daniel’ asked.

“Damn shopkeep called me out! Brought the guards, but I gave ‘em the slip,”

  “Boss is gonna be mad,”

“Not so mad as if I’d gotten caught. ‘Sides, we’ve got most everything we need for the job now, anyway”

“Best go tell him. I’ll warn the others,” With that you watched as the counterfeiter swiftly walked away and you quickly followed him, still keeping to the rooftops as Connor kept the ground. The two of you tailed the man, you having to occasionally jump to ground to get to the next building as he led you two to the more widened streets. You eyed Connor as he quickly hid around the corner of the building you were currently standing on. He looked up at you and gave you a nod, and you nodded back. You looked towards the ground and you immediately spotted a wagon filled with hay. You estimated the space between you and the hay before jumping off from your perch and performing a Leap of Faith before you landed safely in the hay. Peeking through the hay straws you stared at the counterfeiter as he met up with another man.

“I heard what happened at the market,” the man stated, “Boss wants everyone back at the shop. Says we strike tonight,” You watched as Connor moved out from his hiding place to tail the two men as they began to walk and talk. As soon as Connor disappeared from your sight you swiftly jumped out of the hay filled wagon and went behind a brick building, climbing it and following Connor. You couldn’t hear a lot of the conversation, but you caught bits and pieces of it.

“…..worried…..business……the guards?.....nothing. Haven’t had……of trouble…..slipped away. Course, I’m……..care……my distance.” Is what you managed to hear from the counterfeiter’s mouth.

“Can’t believe………do this.” You heard the other man say.

“We’ll be heroes. The ones………ended……talk of revolution. They’ll set……..like kings, they will. Revolution. Bunch a’ trouble……..looking…..upset…….apple-cart cos some fool…………..their heads with rubbish. Ruinin’ it….the rest of us good folk,”

  “Good folk? Really?

“Of course! You….me…..Hickey? Just some…….luck lads………survive…..cold, cruel world,” the counterfeiter finished. Well…You assumed he finished considering you couldn’t hear anything else. You watched as the two men entered into a building and you made your way down the building you were on before jogging up to Connor.

“Did you get what they said? I could barely hear a thing,” you told him, scratching your cheek with a finger.

“Of course,” he said, “Let’s go,” you followed Connor and you two walked up to the door the men used. Just as you were reaching for the door knob Connor’s arm quickly blocked your hand, gesturing you to stop. You glanced at him and he gave you a look that said ‘step back’. So you did. You crossed your arms and cocked a hip as you watched Connor take a few steps back. He ran towards the door, shoulder first and rammed it down. Your eyes widened in surprise and you were about to question him about it until you heard a few groans. Your eyes hardened and you walked up next to Connor to glare at the man on the ground. Apparently, the idiot thought it a good idea to block the door with himself.

“Who’s this?” guys in a Patriot uniform asked. Connor took a step.

  “Thomas Hickey?”

“Might be. What’s it to ya?” the man you now easily identified as Hickey asked, suspicious of you and Connor. Unsheathed his knife from his belt and you had your hand on the hilt of your gun. Ready to help Connor with a quick assassination. Hickey scoffed softly, “Ain’t supposed to be none of your kind left. Suppose I’d best be rectifyin’ that, then. Get ‘im!” he exclaimed before grabbing a bag from the floor and bursting out the back one.

You and Connor made quick work of Hickey’s men and you darted out the door while Connor crashed through a window only to be met with the sight of Hickey in the grasps of some Patriots. The two Patriots looked at you and Connor as one of them pointed and shouted at you two. “There’s some more! Get ‘em!” With this distraction, Hickey bonked heads with the Patriot holding him and made his desperate escape from both you and the Patriots, but you were having none of it. You dashed after Hickey leaving Connor to deal with distracting the Patriots. You followed Hickey through alleys, buildings, and large crowds, all the while dodging any Patriots that saw you as a threat.

“Damn, he’s fast,” you mumbled to yourself as you continued to chase him down. Suddenly, as you dodged a passing wagon, an idea popped into your head. ‘That’s it!’ You shouted in your brain. You forced yourself to stray from Hickey’s path and you turned down another street before stopping at the entrance of an alley way. You pressed yourself up against the wall and breathed. “This better damn well work, otherwise I’m screwed,” you panted. Soon you heard rapid footsteps echoing through the alley and you prepped yourself for what was to come. Once you saw Hickey’s patriot uniform you roughly tackled him to the ground, you straddled him and quickly pinned his arms above his head with one hand while the other was wrapped around his neck.

“It’s over Hickey. You’ve lost,” you said, a bit out of breath from the chase. Hickey panted beneath you.

“So you managed to catch me, eh lass?” he said, “You’re a right fool, meddlin’ in affairs you know nuttin’ about. A young woman like you shouldn’t even be here. If anythin’ you should be in the kitchen makin’ a sandwich,”

You growled in anger, “Shut the fuck up! You know Washington is the only thing keeping the Continental Army in one piece. If you kill him – you’ll destroy all hope for freedom!” you said, your face reddening in anger as you stared at the man under you. Hickey only laughed, his chest heaving up and down with each guffaw.

“That’s where you’re wrong, girlie! Wit ‘im gone, they’d have no choice but to promote Lee. And the-“

“You are both under arrest!” an officer said, pulling both you and Hickey up from the ground.

“Ah well, we were just havin’ a lil’ scrap officer!” Hickey exclaimed, “Nuttin’ but a lil’ lover’s quarrel! C-can’t we come to a-“ 'Lover's quarrel? Really Hickey?' You exasperatedly, fighting the urge to face palm.

“Quiet!!” the officer said, interrupting Hickey. That’s when Connor came in.

“What is going on!?” he asked the officer, “What are the charges!?”

  “Counterfeiting!” another officer said.

“Hey! I had nothing to do with any of that!” you shouted, tugging at the officer’s grip on your arm.

“Oh, of course not!” the third officer dragged sarcastically.

“Listen – there are more important things at stake here. This man is planning to-“ Connor was then knocked by the officer behind you.

“Connor!!!” you shouted, kneeling next to his knocked out body, “Connor!? Connor!! Hey! C’mon man, get up!!! Don’t leave me hanging!!” you cried, shaking him, begging him to get up.

"That’s enough out of you too girl!” You heard an officer say before a sharp pain was felt in the back of your head.

You blacked out.
